As an au pair, you mainly
have to look after the children. They are young, sometimes very young; and
this is maybe your first experience.
So you have to know some things about security: you'll have quick
;
you'll be less worried, and so be more available to the children.
Basic rules are quite the same if the kids are inside or outside.
One of the top priority
rules, especially with the young children is: not to lose sight of them, be
careful to the silence. A silent child is often a child doing a mischief.
At home:
Keep sharp things out of reach for the children(ex : when you cook with the
children, be careful to knives and cissors.)
When you're preparing meals, be careful to the pan and frying pans handles
: they must not overhang the working surface ; a child can bump against
them when playing and burn himself.
The bath : A young child, who doesn't know how to go out from the bath
tube alone, must not be let on his own. Be careful to the water
temperature; A child can be highly burnt by hot water. Even if he's
playing, don't let a child run water without watching it.
As far as possible, close every window of the room the child is in. Open
them to air the room when he is no longer in it. Closed windows avoid
things to fall, and also avoid the child feeling as Peter Pan or Superman.
Keep some phone numbers always on reach: the parents one; the 18 (firemen),
the 17police
and the 15 (medical emergency). Prevention is better than cure.
Outside :
The street if full of dangers. Ask the child to give you its hand.
Be careful to follow some rules: traffic lights, zebra crossings… it's a
safety for you, and it allows children to acquire good
behaviour/attitude in the
street. Be careful!!! Even when the tiny man is green, you have to be very
vigilant.
In the garden, it is tempting sitting on a bench and let the children play…in
the middle of the hustle. Try to stay beside them, help them with some
plays, show them you are there, it puts them at ease and
avoid some accidents.
At the swimming
pool:
You may have to join the children to the swimming
pool. Either public or private, it can be dangerous and especially with children who can't swim.
Don't let them run near the pool; be sure they are calm
in the water: if the child gets panic all of a sudden, the accident can quickly happen. Don't take off
the rubber rings or life belts to the children who can't swim. Advise them
catch their breaths back when they have been swimming a lot, or when they
often put their heads under water. Never lose sight of them.
When you go out,
you must always have
:
- paper tissues
- a small bottle of water
- snacks (bread, cakes…)
- if possible, some disinfectant swipes (ask for them to the parents), to
care the scratchs
- hat, sun cream… when it is hot
- and always make it possible to join the parents in case of problem
