Questions to ask to your host family

As soon as you have the details of your host family, you must get in touch with it. The easiest way to do so is to call them.
Here are some questions that you may ask them, but be careful (do not ask your family all of them the first time otherwise you may scare them) :

Why do you want an au pair?
Have you been employing aupairs for a long time now ?
What is your definition of an au pair?
What are your expectations of me as your new au pair?
Is there any possibility for me to meet your family before we make a definitive desicion/before my arrival?

ABOUT THE CHILDREN :
How many kids do you have? (if you don't have their file obviously)
How old are the kids?
What language do they speak ? What are their leisure activities?
Could you describe me the kids? or Talk to me about them.(ask for a picture of the kids)
Do they have particular illnesses, allergies or handicaps?
Are they going to school, or to the nursery… ?

Will I any time be totaly left alone with the children more than one night or during a whole week-end?

ABOUT THE FAMILY

Do you have pets?
Are you married?
Do you smoke?
Do you have a particular diet(vegetarian, kasher) ?
What languages do you speak?
What are the leisure activities of the family?

HOUSING
Do you live in an appartment or a house?
Am I going to have my personnal room or am I to share it with a kid ?
Am I going to share the same appartment (or house) ?
Will I be allowed to go out at night without disturbing you?
How about the meals if I'm alone?
How does telephone works ? May I sometimes call my parents? And what about them to call me?
Do you have an internet access? Limited or not?
Do you have foreign channels on tv?
Am I allow to bring friends home with me and also to receive visit from my home country?
Are my parents allow to come for a visit during my stay?

SCHOOL
How does it work?
Do you have a school to recommend me?
Do you know the price?

ADMINISTRATIVE
Will I have to obtain a visa?
Do you have an insurance for me? (list of companies that propose aupair insurance - in family section).
If you are coming from a country outside of the EEC, you have to require a placement agreement signed by the DDT to obtain your visa. If you are European, rules are more flexible.

WORK
Roughly, how many hours (days) am I going to work?
Am I to drive the car? What about the car insurance?
Am I to help the children with their homework?
What am I going to do exactly? Taking the kids to school
To the park? Wash them? And about the housekeeping, what are your requirements ?
Some ironing, laundry?

MONEY
How much are you going to pay me? Are you going to pay for my transport tickets and other local fares ?

RELIGION
What is their religion and is it important to them
May I go to the church, or to the temple….without any problem
Do you have any particular religious habits?
May I (if you want to) join in family gatherings ?
During the year, if I want to, may I have some extra holidays to go back a few days at home ?
If it turns out badly, if I'm not feeeling well with my family. (What's going on) What will happen next,
will you respect the code of conduct of the agency ?
